ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR M.A. PROGRAMMES
Applicants should possess:
- A good Bachelor’s degree with Education component (e.g. B.Ed.), from the University of Education, Winneba or its equivalent from a recognized University in the relevant field of study, or
- a good Bachelor’s Degree without Education e.g. (B.A, BSc) from an accredited University in the relevant field of study.
- Applicants with good first degrees from any field of study can apply for M.A. Human Rights, Conflict and Peace Studies and M.A. Communication & Media Studies programmes.
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR M.ED PROGRAMMES
Applicants must:
- Possess a good first degree (at least 2nd Class Lower Division) from the University of Education, Winneba or other Universities recognised by the Academic Board of the University of Education, Winneba or from any institution accredited by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission of Ghana in the relevant field.
- Applicants with a good second class honours (second class lower or better) degree in other disciplines other than Education are required to obtain a Diploma in Education, Postgraduate Diploma in Education or its equivalence before applying.
- Applicants with third (3rd) class honours or pass in their respective first degrees with or without education component would be required to pass an interview and an entrance examination.
INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS
- A baccalaureate with GPA not below 3.0 from an accredited 4-year higher education in Counselling Psychology or related field of study (e.g. Psychology, Guidance & Counselling, Social Work, and Nursing).
- Demonstration of English competencies from an institution that conducted instruction in English or an equivalent score of 86 and above in TOEFL or at least a 6.5 in IELTS.
- Computer literacy demonstrated by ease of use of Microsoft office and google application software.
- Applicants must pass a digital interview to obtain admission.
M.ED TEACHING ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (T.E.S.L.)
i. Applicants must have good first degree (at least Second Class Lower) in English Language or
ii. applicants with a good Bachelor’s Degree in any subject area and who TEACH ENGLISH are eligible to apply.
M.ED SOCIAL STUDIES EDUCATION
Applicants must have a good bachelor’s degree (i.e. at least Second Class Lower) with Education component in Social Studies or relevant field of study (Geography, Economics, History, Political Science, Development Studies, etc.) from a recognised University.
- Applicants with Bachelor’s degree without Education component must in addition have a Postgraduate Diploma in Education or Diploma in Education.
- A person who holds a relevant professional qualification approved by the Academic Board
- Notwithstanding regulations i) to iii) above, a candidate may be required as a condition for admission to undergo such tests as may be prescribed by the Department with his proposed work or to take such other pre-requisite or concurrent studies and examinations as may be prescribed, subject to overall control of the board.
M.ED. SPECIAL EDUCATION
A good Bachelor’s degree (at least second class lower division) in Special Education.
ii. A professional qualification (in the relevant discipline) approved by the Academic Board as being equivalent to a good bachelor’s degree.
iii. A good Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline/ profession such as nursing etc from a recognised public University.
iv. An academic transcript shall be required for the admission.
M.ED. FOOD AND NUTRITION
Applicants must have obtained a B.Ed. Home Economics degree (with a foundation in Food and Nutrition) or BSc. Home Economics Education (with a foundation in Food and Nutrition) from the University of Education, Winneba or any institution recognised by the University of Education, Winneba with at least second class lower.
- Candidates with BA or B.Sc Home Economics/ Home Science/ Family and Consumer Science with a foundation in Food and Nutrition or Catering and Hospitality from any other University recognised by the Academic Board of the University of Education, Winneba.
- Candidates must in addition to ii) have a Diploma in Education or Postgraduate Diploma in Education.
- B.Ed. Basic Education with Vocational Skills or Home Economics option (with Food and Nutrition) with second class lower or better grade.
- Candidates with option (iv) qualification will be required to take area-based deficit courses in addition to their M.Ed. courses.
- Candidates with third class must pass an entrance examination.
M.ED. FAMILY LIFE MANAGEMENT
- Applicants must have obtained a B.Ed/ BSc Home Economics Education from the University of Education, Winneba or any institution recognised by the University of Education, Winneba with at least second class lower.
- Candidates with B.A or B.Sc Home Economics/ B.Ed. Home Science/ Family and Consumer Science/ Catering and Hospitality/ Fashion from any other University recognised by the Academic Board of the University of Education, Winneba.
- Candidates must in addition to ii) have a Diploma in Education or Postgraduate Diploma in Education.
- B.Ed. Basic Education with Vocational Skills or Home Economics option (with Food and Nutrition) with second class lower or better grade.
- Candidates with option (iv) qualification will be required to take area-based deficit courses in addition to their M.Ed. courses
- Candidates with third class must pass an entrance examination.
M.ED. CLOTHING AND TEXTILES
Applicants seeking admission into M.Ed. programme should have obtained:
- B.Ed Home Economics or
- BSc. Home Economics from the University of Education, or an equivalent qualification from any other University recognized by the Academic Board of University of Education, Winneba with at least second class lower.
- B.Tech Fashion and Textiles
- B.Ed. Basic Education with Vocational Skills or Home Economics option (with Clothing and Textiles) with second class lower or better grade.
- Candidates with option (iv) qualification will be required to take area-based deficit courses in addition to their M.Ed. courses.
- Candidates with third class must pass an entrance examination and interview.
M.ED EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION
- Applicants must have obtained a good first degree (at least Second Class Lower) in Early Childhood Education, Basic Education, Special Education, Guidance and Counselling, from University of Education, Winneba or a recognized University.
- Applicants should have a qualification in Educational Studies (Diploma in Education or better)
MSC. ECONOMICS EDUCATION
Applicants must:
- possess a good first degree (At least 2nd Class Lower Division) in economics or programmes which are business- related such as finance, accounting, and entrepreneurship among others or any of the social science programmes with economics at the tertiary level of education from a recognized University.
- pass a selection interview.
- Third class applicants shall pass an entrance examination and interview before they are admitted.
MSC. BIOLOGY EDUCATION
- Applicants must possess a good first degree (At least 2nd Class Lower Division) in Biology Education from any recognized University
- A good first degree (At least 2nd Class Lower Division) in Biology (with an education component) from a recognized University.
- A good first degree (At least 2nd Class Lower Division) in Biology or related area such as Botany, Zoology or Environmental Science from a recognised University with a postgraduate diploma in education or its equivalent.
- All applicants must pass a selection interview.
MSC. BIOLOGY
- Applicants must possess a good first degree (At least 2nd Class Lower Division) in Biology from any recognized University.
- A good first degree (At least 2nd Class Lower Division) in Biology from a recognized University with or without education background.
- A good first degree (At least 2nd Class Lower Division) in Biology or related area such as Botany, Zoology or Environmental Science from a recognised University with or without a postgraduate diploma in education or its equivalent.
- All applicants must pass a selection interview.
MSC. IN DEVELOPMENT FINANCE (Sandwich and Weekend Mode)
- Candidates for admission to the programme must have earned a Bachelor’s degree from a recognised University in any discipline with at least 2nd Class Lower Division.
- Applicants with third (3rd) class division may be considered for admission on the grounds of substantial working/ professional experience.
- Foreign students with academic and professional qualifications equivalent to and certified by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission may apply for admission.
- Applicants must pass a competitive selection interview to be considered for admission.
M.ED. GEOGRAPHY EDUCATION
Applicants should:
- possess a first degree (At least 2nd Class Lower Division or better) in Geography or any related discipline.
- pass a selection interview.
M. A. ART EDUCATION
Applicants must possess:
- a good first degree in relevant discipline (Studio Art, Art Education, Design or Art History) from a recognized tertiary institution.
M.A. SECURITY SCIENCE
- Applicants with a good first degree (At least 2nd Class Lower Division or better) in any discipline from a recognised institution.
- Persons who hold relevant professional qualifications comparable to a first degree such as specialized certificates obtained from recognized professional institutions like the Police Service, Prisons Service, Immigration Service, Ports and Habour, Armed Forces training institutions, Customs Exercise and Preventive Service, Fire Service, Bureau of National Investigation and Peace Council.
- Notwithstanding regulations (1) to (2) above, a candidate may be required as a condition for admission to undergo such assessment or take such other pre-requisite or concurrent studies and examinations as may be prescribed by the Center for Conflict, Human Rights and Peace Studies subject to overall control of the Graduate School.
M.A. HUMAN RIGHTS, CONFLICT AND PEACE STUDIES
- Candidates should have a good first degree in any Social Science discipline from a recognized institution.
- Candidates who hold relevant professional qualifications equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree.
- Members of recognized professional institutions like the Police Service, Prisons Service, Ghana Education Service, Immigration Service, Ports and Habours, Armed Forces, Health Services and District, Municipal and Metropolitan Assemblies who have Bachelor’s degree.
- Candidates meeting the requirement stipulated in regulations (a) to (c) must also meet other conditions or requirements as may be prescribed by the Graduate Board.
- Candidates with third class will write entrance exams.
M.ED. MATHEMATICS EDUCATION
- An applicant should have a good first degree not below Second Class
- Lower Division in Mathematics Education or Mathematics.
- Applicants with professional qualification approved by the Academic Board as being equivalent to a good first degree.
- Pass an interview
- Applicants must provide academic transcript.
- Applicants with a third class degree must in addition to (c) and (d) pass a written examination by the University of Education, Winneba.
M.ED COUNSELLING PSYCHOLOGY
- A Bachelor’s degree with GPA of not below 3.0 from an accredited University in Counselling Psychology or related field of study (E.g. Psychology, Guidance & Counselling, Social Work, and Nursing).
- Applicants whose GPA is below 3.0 could be considered subject to current population they serve, and contingent upon passing a written and oral examination.
- English Language competency at the global undergraduate level demonstrated in oral interview and written exams.
- Computer literacy demonstrated by ease of use OF word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software.
- Digital competency demonstrated by ease of use of sending and receiving email and other digital communication.
- Applicants must pass an interview to obtain admission.
M.ED EDUCATIONAL ADMINISTRATION AND MANAGEMENT

Applicants must:
- Possess a good first degree (at least 2nd Class Lower Division) from the University of Education, Winneba or other Universities recognised by the Academic Board of the University of Education, Winneba or from any institution accredited by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission of Ghana.
- Applicants with a good honours (second class lower or better) degree in other disciplines other than Education are required to obtain a Postgraduate Diploma in Education or its equivalence before applying.
- Applicants with 3rd class Honours in their respective first degrees would be required to pass an interview and an entrance examination.
POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN EDUCATION (This programme is run in the distance learning mode and on Sandwich Basis)
- Applicant should hold a first Degree from a recognized institution.
- Must have interest in teaching.
- Must pass a selection screening and or interview.
M.A. GHANAIAN LANGUAGE STUDIES
- Candidates must have obtained a first degree (First Class or a Second Class Division) from the University of Education, Winneba or any recognized university with any of the following programmes:
- Ghanaian Language
- Linguistics with courses in the Ghanaian Language, which the student has chosen to study.
- Candidates are to attend and pass the University’s selection interview.
EXECUTIVE MASTERS IN HUMAN RIGHTS, CONFLICT AND PEACE STUDIES
- A candidate with a good first degree in any discipline from a recognized institution.
- Members of recognized professional institutions like the Police Service, Prisons Service, Ghana Education Service, Immigration Service, Ports and Habour, Armed Forces, Health Services and the District, Municipal and Metropolitan Assemblies who have Senior High School (SHS), Ordinary or Advanced Levels Certificates with five or more years working experience.
- Candidates will have to pass selection interview.
M.ED POLITICAL SCIENCE EDUCATION
- Candidates who apply for the programme should have Political Science major (First Degree) or combined Political Science with another subject, and must have attained at least a Second Class Lower Division.
- Applicant with third class or a pass will write an entrance examination or pass a selection interview or both to be conducted by the Department.
M.ED. COMPUTER EDUCATION AND TECHNOLOGY
Applicants must possess
- A good Bachelor’s degree (at least 2nd class lower division) in Information Technology, Information and Communication Technology or Computer Science
- Any other good Bachelor’s degree with relevant teaching/ working experience (at least 2nd class lower division).
- Lecturers and Tutors who want to acquire knowledge and skills in the area of Pedagogical integration of ICT’s.
- Applicants to this programme must also submit personal essay (500-600 words, double spaced) that addresses the applicant’s career goals, teaching experience, teaching philosophy, prior experience using ICT, and views on the role of ICT in enhancing instruction and training.
M.A HISTORY EDUCATION
- Candidates must possess a good first degree (at least a Second Class Lower Division) in History or B.A Social Sciences with History option.
- Candidates should have History Major (first degree) or combined History with another subject, must have attained at least a Second Class Lower Division.
- Applicants will have to pass a selection interview to be conducted by the department.
- Applicants after successfully pursing the M.A. History Education programme may do a one-year top up leading to the award of an M.Phil. Degree.
POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA IN TEACHING AND LEARNING IN HIGHER EDUCATION (PGDTLHE)
- A beginning lecturer in the University of Education, Winneba.
- Lecturers from tertiary institutions who have no formal qualifications in teaching in higher education.
- A master’s/ doctorate degree holder who wishes to pursue academic career as a teacher in tertiary institutions.
Applicants with Master’s degree must:
- Possess a good first degree (at least 2nd class lower division) from the University of Education, Winneba or from any institution accredited by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission of Ghana.
